So this song is featured on one of the radio stations in GTA4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wf4JjMPACg4&feature=related, and it's got me interested in seeking out some classical music to get. No idea where to start as there's hundreds of different CDs that come under something like "Mozart", which doesn't mean too much to a layman.

Classical is a really general term, try and find what style you like (such as symphony, operatic etc.) then go from there.

Yeah, that wasn't very helpful but here's my 3 favourite works for what it's worth:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gorecki-Symphony-No-3-Sorrowful-Songs/dp/B000005J1C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1246809809&sr=8-1

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wagner-Ring-Nibelungen-Richard/dp/B0000042H4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1246809827&sr=8-1

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beethoven-Symphonies-Nos-5-7/dp/B000001GPX/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1246809854&sr=8-1

To try and be a bit more helpful Glass is a minimalist composer so search for other minimalist composers and go from there. Don't listen to all that much minimalism myself to give examples.

Missed this thread before.

The problem is that people often come in and say 'recommend me some classical music'. But the classical genre is bigger and has more variety of music than non-classical, so it can be difficult to know where to start.

My advice is to go out and buy a cheap 'Top 100 classical' CD. There are a lot of different compilations but you're only buying it for sampling purposes, so there's no need to buy something conducted by a top maestro.

Buy a cheap 'Top 100' CD, listen to it and figure out what styles you like the best, then come back for more recommendations.

For the memories, I recently went back and tracked down some of the more memorable music that I studied/sung/played in high school and primary school. Verdi, Holst, Stravinsky, Mussorgsky, Mozart, Strauss, Borodin, Handel, Beethoven... TOWER OF POWER

etc

Good times. I miss being in a choir/orchestra.

Yeah I was in choir. Gangsterrrrrr
