View Full Version : Hottest 100 of all time
Tremendous Boob

Interesting stuff so far. Bon Iver got in when it was only in the teens of last years Hottest 100. Surprised to see TVOTR there considering they only got one song on last years Hottest 200(136 or something). And hey, Sex On Fire just came on, good to see it's not further up. Not that it should be anywhere near the list anyway.
Personally, what I wanna see this week is some ridiculous prog on the list. Y'know, 20+ minutes long. I wanna see triple J play the whole thing at the risk of listeners turning off halfway through a section of noise (e.g. Pink Floyd's Echoes in the section that connects Part 1 and 2).
And no more Kings of Leon.

Fuck, I should have voted for some songs. I would have tired to setup a constantly refreshing vote in Firefox for Echoes for two reasons: 1) To see of they would play the whole thing and 2) Because it's awesome.

Good to see a few songs I voted for on there already like Unfinished Symphony and Life on Mars, can't say many songs bother me too much being there yet either, except maybe Sex on Fire, it's ok but it was way over saturation point even before taking out the yearly hottest 100 earlier in the year.
When I heard that fucking Greenday song, I punched the radio.

The main thing wrong with the Rolling Stone list is that The Byrds version of 'Mr Tambourine Man' is rated higher than Dylan's...
Voted lists are particularly shit, because they're always going to be skewed towards recent years and most people don't know enough about music history to assess the significance of older music vs. some sentimental tune from Greenday. There should be a rule that you can't vote for any song written in the last five years.

In complete agreement. This is shit.
For some reason I don't like Bohemian Rhapsody, I think karaoke killed it.
This is a classic.

wayne's world gave it another lease of life. also it's one of those songs that's been a top ten hit in every decade since it's release i'm fairly sure. yep.
and i heart radiohead.
edit. more jeff buckley. but i love hallelujah.
I love how all the music whiners are complaining about the hottest 100. Maybe they should realise that people with taste don't listen to the radio LOL!

I can't believe 'Like a Rolling Stone' only made it to 55. I want to strangle anyone who voted for that Jeff Buckley dirge over it.

true story - when i first heard him and enjoyed his music i had no idea he was dead. i went to go and find the next album after grace and then suddenly....oh.
still mind-blowing that last goodbye is so high. grace is still his best song, it's a shame it was so low.
tbh I prefer Forget Her, but w/e ;D
I like this countdown. It amuses me that everyone here is getting shitty @ triple j when they pretty much target a core demographic (teens =OO) and as such, this countdown seems fairly normal. Surprised many Aus. bands didn't get songs higher in the list. EH!
Oh and just for the record, Homesick Blues > rolling stone. Seriously, rolling stone is the biggest piece of overrated shit dylan ever wrote, and you're a fucking shit person for liking it. I hope the Chinese government rapes you in the dick readman.

One, it's not his song. Two, like, goddamn it's not the massive pathos-inducing, menstrual-flooding song that it's exterior suggests (just that same as with Imagine). Readman's right, the only thing that can fix this is The Monster Mash.

Well that's the thing, All Along The Watchtower is just great ROCKNROLL YEAAAH! This Top 10 is mostly overly sentimental swill.
Probably everyone's trying to sooth their bushfire burns and fill their empty super-annuation with the power of music.
Rage Against The Machine is pretty left-of-field for number 2. That said it's better than everything in the top 10 aside from Bohemian Rhapsody.

If he'd done more covers of Leonard Cohen I bet he'd be a shoe-in!
Most of the 20+ songs seem to be songs that have transcended themselves by common association - being paired with movies, motifs, and moments. Creep isn't a fantastic song, but it's the iconographic fawning song. Stairway to Heaven is only probably not Zeppelin's best song, but it is the most memorable rock song of the decade ("Oh shit, I should probably vote for a Zep song..."). Imagine is the postersong for world peace; again by common assocation moreso than some extraordinary merit. And so on. Most songs on there I haven't heard in years, yet they remain isntantly recognisable by virtue of powerful associations.
RATM was surprising and pleasing. I don't think it's had the powerful history of assocations like other songs, so maybe all of its power is derived simply from musical talent and good old musical anarchic themes.
I didn't vote, but I was pleasantly surprised to see Tool right up there. Stinkfist isn't a surprising choice since it's one of their most lyrically confronting songs, a bitter and poignant analogy for cultural desensitisation (a much better and more global effort than vicarious). I have to remind myself at times that Tool is the most popular obscure band in the world, catapaulted out of alternative obscurity entirely on the strength of their music and lyrics. Kudos to them, well deserved.

Syt, you must remember, Maxi is a big musician. Clearly he's more tuned on to the music scene than us average joes.
Oh it's Maxi, that makes sense.
I'm not talking about hoighty-toighty, self-righteous over analysis here. You provide a bunch of clever year 11s (in a progressive school!) with the lyrics and a short bio on MJK and you have my word they'll all have the word "desensitisation" in their essays. It's a damn shame that so few people can accept simple literary devices like metaphor and analogy might be employed in songwriting.
I suppose Maxi also thinks that The Shawshank Redemption is about "escaping from prison" and that Forrest Gump was "a love story about guys like me, Maxi"
meatrocket
13-07-09, 01:40 AM
I suppose Maxi is only bassist, so it's not like he's the one that contributes to the song making process!
But enough pathetic jabs at Maxi. It would seem that Maynard, at least from some interviews I've read involving him, thinks highly of himself and his work, so much so that he has criticised his fans for perhaps not being intellectual enough to grasp some concepts of Tool's work. Of course, the possibility I'm paraphrasing and remembering incorrectly is rather high. So, while there's obviously more than what is on the surface for some of Tool's songs, it's possible that what is beyond is simply wank. <_<

Put enough effort into an analysis and you can make absolutely anything seem greater than the thing actually is. I remember a while ago on Hyper when it was decided Big Brother could be viewed as an intentionally ironic representation on how the greater society operates. But we all know that's a crock of shit.
Just because something can be read as being greater than it actually is, doesn't mean it actually is greater than it actually is!
Actually the part you posted before you edited your post about Maynard saying "interpret this as you wish" screams of the same wankery you can find in the art world in more modern times, "Here is a brick, interpret it as you wish!" with actually no effort on their part as to create the idea, in their own mind, what their picture of a brick means to them. Just by saying "interpret it as you wish" they guarantee that at least one person will create something meaningful out of it and they can judge their artwork BIG SUCCESS.
Not to say Tool songs can't have greater meaning, as you said, but that above attitude just really irks me in regards to this whole debate.

The Shawshank Redemption is the masculine equivalent of a chick flick. It's also considered a cult classic. If I have the time tonight, I'll find the tongue-in-cheek article that claims Donnie Darko & The Shawshank Redemption are the same basic movie.
Back to music... the first rule of Tool Club is DON'T TRUST ANYTHING THAT ANY BAND MEMBER SAYS. ESPECIALLY DANNY CAREY. Artistic merit goes hand-in-hand with juvenile humour for Tool, they're multi-level like that.
Stinkfist has some deeper meanings and personal relevances for the band, but they really did want to conjure the image of hand entering anus.
And back to the list... nothing wrong with Stairway To Heaven, it's a solidly written song mired in fey mysticism due to overconsumption of cheap cider. It's not the greatest Zeppelin song, but this list wasn't about the greatest songs. This list was about favourite songs via hivemind. A lot of people would have looked at the votelist and thought "Wow, I forgot all about Smells Like Teen Spirit, I should vote for it!" and now here we are.
I would have liked something actually subversive in that list, something that used dischord (because I love dischord) - like New Noise.

What Bee Gees song would you have in there, I love The Bee Gees but picking a standout song other than Stayin' Alive would be difficult.
Grease and Tragedy, motherfucker.
Grease the song is almost as bad as the musical.

:psyduck:
Grease is an awesome song! ;_;
Yeah, I wouldn't take that kind of junk from most musicians. The only reason I accept it from Tool is at least their music is technically and musically creative. Abstract art that I could produce is impossible to swallow, but at least if it shows some technical skill then there's some merit.

Tool aren't technically or musically creative. They're boring repetitive shit that shouldn't be around.
I mean fuck, go look at any stoner doom band and they have repetitive riffs without the pretentious wankery of Tool.

That's just, like, your opinion, man.
Besides, Tool have shown growth as a band from their EP to now, which is more than I can say for a lot of stoner rock bands pedalling the same bunch of riffs lifted from Paranoid.

Tool haven't come a long way at all O_o
They're like Motorhead, all their stuff sounds the same. The only difference is that Motorheads stuff sounds good!
Also, the stoner bands just do recycle riffs, but at least it sounds good. And they don't jerk off into their own mouths and smell their farts.
I don't mind some Tool songs, but their music is pretty bullshit. Songs like 46 & 2, and Schism are essentially the same riff repeated ad nauseam, only differentiated by using a different effect.
I'm not one to espouse the notion that all songs need to be complex intertwining structures, but certain sections of Tool fans seem to harp on about their music being the second coming of prog.

I never said they had come a long way, just that there had been progression from their EP to now. And I disagree that all their stuff sounds the same, but clearly it's of little point discussing as neither party is going to relent ground.
@Lazlow: Adam Jones has copped flak from some for being the "weakest" band member. Which is fair enough in some regards.

And I play bass, so therefore I'm a musical god.

You moved onto bass from guitar because your band didn't need another guitarist. You're a failure and a disgrace to proper bass guitarists. <_<

I'm a disgrace to musicians in general, I think.

Possibly. Still, you might have fans in Japan! More than some are able to boast.

Oh yeah, I wouldn't even really call them prog. People will slap prog on to anything where there's a single change in tempo or rhythm or whatever.
I'd love to be able to point to some clearly definable aspect of their music that exemplifies the subtlety of their writing, but I can't - then I don't have an argument to make. I like to think that as I get more involved in music I'll be able to articulate what it is about Tool that impresses me so much. I just find it subtle, effective, and novel.
Re: Adam Jones. I don't know that I'd say he's weak, but Tool is heavily bass/drum driven so guitar spends much less time in the foreground than other prog/rock bands. He's certainly not a technical guitar god, though. It might seem like a trivial point but I think his contributions to the bands artistic direction should be considered.
