First episode is on Monday.

What I want to know is how long does it last before we're seeing Futurama repeats as a desperate replacement for a failed show?

OR DOES IT SURVIVE THE WHOLE SEASON?

M_Truth
18-07-09, 06:22 PM
Seeing as it's got Charlie Pickering and Dave Hughes, I hope it does well.

But my gut feeling tells me it won't last longer than five eps.

I dunno, channel 10 have a pretty long history of promoting shows to nauseating levels then cutting them after they fall flat on their face.

You will hardly believe this, but Ch. 10 have commissioned fifty-two weeks of episodes. Un-freaking-believable for such a high-risk show.

I seriously think it has the potential, I thought it was a good concept. The 7pm slot is a bit stale and a comedy news show would be nice, but the personalities are all wrong. Cant believe the 'sneak peeks' they are showing us. They've scripted this 'sneak peeks', they should be hilarious. They are barely smile-worthy.

Shaun Micallef should host.

Pretty sure she was, and that's when Micallef ripped an awesome line about her tats. He gave her the texta to do the pictionary thing and said "Here you go, now you can do your other arm"

Spudzilla

Even reading that line from Micallef made me laugh more than any of the 'sneak previews' for the 7PM Project, which has been 0.

Well I for one can't wait to hear more about the hilarious antics of Dave Hughes' whiny wife and kid.

The problem with the show for me is that there's not one person on it that I want to tune in to watch. I see enough of Charlie Pickering on TGYH, I want no more. Dave Hughes' material is boring, Carrie Bickmore, from what I've seen on her from Rove she kills any comedic moment by merely expressing her opinion. Ruby Rose? That loser from Idol? No thanks.

I thought CP was really funny in The Mansion, so I look forward to seeing him doing more current affairs satire. But I agree re: Dave Hughes, I hope he doesn't just recycle his Glass House shtick for this show because that got really boring by the end.

5 episodes a week, 52 a year.

Yep. The first ep will get huge ratings from people wondering wtf it's all about, so even if every other ep gets 0 ratings they'll be saying "Check out the show EVERYONE IN AUSTRALIA IS TALKING ABOUT based on first ep ratings IT'S A NATIONAL PHENOMENON based on the first ep ratings".

I would support Noble and Lawson Unplanned in place of this. Especially if it followed the Baddiel and Skinner original format.

James Mathisson pipes in with a throw away comment about the news story/how they're ignoring him on the end of the table

Charlie actually says something funny no-one else gets.

Real let down. Tried to be half-serious and half-satire and failed at both.

There were only a couple of stories where they got to make jokes (and I'll admit, I lolled two or three times during the whole ep), but all those serious stories about people getting shot and killed were a lose/lose situation, because if they made jokes about those stories they'd be terrible human beings, but if they didn't (which is what happened) then the show would be boring and irrelevant (ie. why don't I watch Sky News instead?).

The worst thing is that they took the best part of the show- the interview, which I thought was pretty interesting and funny- and said you had to visit the website to catch the full interview. Why not show the full thing on the show? It's not like they had anything better to show.

Also, am I the only person is Australia who does not give a shit about Masterchef? Why the fuck did they have to show ten minutes of it, and then cut the interview with the Hollywood megastars? Fuck that, if I want to watch a cooking show I'll watch professional chefs on Top Chef. I suppose that this show is basically going to be a vehicle for Ten to flog all their crappy reality shows on, just like Rove. :p

Then again, it was the first ep, so I might watch a couple more just to see if they settle into some kind of rhythm. Also, I'm curious to see how this 'interactivity' thing is used.

Dear The 7PM Project,

You have the potential to be a really good show. But tonight, you seemed very light on entertainment for a Light Entertainment program.
It might help if you can decide whether you want to be a talk show, a panel show, or a satirical news show. Pick one, so the viewers know their place.
It would also be really nice if you didn't promote your guests and upcoming stories exactly like Rove does. Be unique. And lose the grainy overlay on your background screens, along with the lame lead-in graphic before every single clip you show.
It was nice how you managed to imitate The Panel for a little bit near the end - more of that might be the way to go. We will see in the days and weeks to come, I'm sure, as we become even more oversaturated with promotions for you.

Keep Hughesy sedated,

All they really need to do is:

A. Only show news stories that they can make jokes about

B. If they do an interview with some hard-to-get international megastar, show the whole thing

There you go, a half-decent show with potential.

No, they need to grow some balls and make fun of anything they put up, and they can't really show an entire interview because it's only a half hour show and they have to show other shit as well.

dickcockpenis
21-07-09, 12:18 PM
It was okay. Wasnt the trainwreck you guys are saying it was. Definite first-show nerves. But, having watched it, I think they've got the formula wrong. News, but not as you know it, is fine, but why have actual news in there? Just have pure satire. There's absolutely no need for Carrie to report the news either. By 7pm, if you havent seen a news telecast, it's because you dont want to. And if you do want to see a news telecast at 7pm, you're watching ABC news. Why cant the host (cant work out who it is or even if there is one), just introduce the news story and then go from there?

Also, for a half-hour show, they shouldve had either Sienna Miller or Julie as the guest. Not both. Admittedly, I didnt watch the Sienna Miller interview because I knew it would blow. I just cant stand interviews where the interviewer spends fifteen minutes just blowing smoke up someones arse because they made a movie. But the Julie interview was blink and you miss it kind of stuff. They couldve really tapped into the huge Masterchef market with some inside information. One of the papers was saying that the judges tasted all the dishes cold, wouldve been good to ask Julie a bit more about the process, about other contestants et cetera.

Flicked it over to Seven to watch what happens with Trey and THE BOMB while Ruby Rose was on. Love watching the acting on that show.

And, Mathison was weird on that show. He actually had some funny material (only person in Australia not watching Masterchef and something sexual that I cant remember), but his delivery is just awkward.

No, they need to grow some balls and make fun of anything they put up, and they can't really show an entire interview because it's only a half hour show and they have to show other shit as well.

Firstly, they should have shown the entire interview (IMO) because it was the best part of the show. If it's too long for a half hour, make the interview shorter from the start. Set a time limit or something. But I think they definitely had time to show it because there was heaps of stuff that could've (should've) been cut.

And as far as the first comment goes- I completely disagree. If they actually did 'grow some balls' and make jokes about people getting blown up in Jakarta no less than two days ago, I would have immediately switched over and never looked back. That would have been stupid, insensitive, controversy for the sake of controversy, and not funny.

Though I suppose you'd still make some half-arsed attempt to defend it like you did with that Chaser sketch. :p

What do you mean some half-arsed attempt to defend the Chaser sketch, you thought it was tasteless because it was making fun of kids, other people thought it was funny because it was a skit that was centered around the whole farce of even thinking the things they were saying.

You said it was 'a brilliant piece of satire', even though there was nothing in that sketch that even came close to resembling 'satire'. Satire is supposed to be funny. Satire is supposed to make a point, to make us rethink something or challenge our perception of something in an intelligent way. The Chaser sketch had none of that, all it was doing was saying "ZOMG WE LUV CONTROVERSEEEEEEE". The sketch wasn't even original, South Park tried the same idea (the whole 'we can't give you this wish but how about this instead' thing) in the Kenny Dies episode but they did it in a way that was a billion times better in all the respects I mentioned above.

As I said once before, if you can explain to me what in the Chaser sketch counted as 'satire' I'd love to hear it.

you thought it was tasteless because it was making fun of kids

I didn't just think it was tasteless, I also thought it was unfunny and brain-dead. I don't mind something that's tasteless if it has some real thought or a real point behind it (Dave Chappelle anyone?), but being tasteless just for shock value and nothing else is pathetic.

And that's what would have happened if The 7PM Project made fun of the Jakarta bombings. Tasteless and pathetic. Hence, they shouldn't make fun of every story.

other people thought it was funny because it was a skit that was centered around the whole farce of even thinking the things they were saying.

That sentence makes no sense whatsoever.

Dave Chappelle called a sick kid a little bitch, why don't you go start on him too

No, that sketch counts as satire. :p

22-07-09, 04:14 AM

twofivefour
22-07-09, 09:19 AM
So, M_Truth, your whole point hinges on the fact that YOU THINK Dave Chapelle had more honourable intentions than The Chaser, when we all know that Intent Doesn't Matter, Perception Does.

You liked Dave Chappelle shouting at a kid more than The Chaser offering a dying kid a stick. There's the crux of your argument. Your opinion differs from other peoples because of your own likes and dislikes.
In other news, grass generally green, sky perceieved as blue, water wet in liquid state.

You said it was 'a brilliant piece of satire', even though there was nothing in that sketch that even came close to resembling 'satire'.

Or so you think.

Satire is supposed to be funny.

No it isn't, but being funny is often the result.

Satire is supposed to make a point, to make us rethink something or challenge our perception of something in an intelligent way.

Which it did, I thought.

The Chaser sketch had none of that, all it was doing was saying "ZOMG WE LUV CONTROVERSEEEEEEE".

Or so you thought.

The sketch wasn't even original, South Park tried the same idea (the whole 'we can't give you this wish but how about this instead' thing) in the Kenny Dies episode but they did it in a way that was a billion times better in all the respects I mentioned above.

SIMPSONS DID IT

As I said once before, if you can explain to me what in the Chaser sketch counted as 'satire' I'd love to hear it.

The entire skit was a farce, which counts as a form of satire given that that term is fairly broad. It was supposed to be so farcical no-one would take it seriously and it would actually give credit back to the charities who help children in situations like these and attack people who thought a) agree with the skit without a hint of irony and b) people in general who think like what the characters in the skit said about the children (they'll die soon anyway etc.)

And intentionally or unintentionally, the skit actually poses a more straight question: why do we have charities that cater to not just kids, but dying or ill people in general? What point do they serve in society? The irony present in the skit would say the Chaser team believes they do a good job of making people happy in their last moments, but the question is still present.

I didn't just think it was tasteless, I also thought it was unfunny and brain-dead. I don't mind something that's tasteless if it has some real thought or a real point behind it (Dave Chappelle anyone?), but being tasteless just for shock value and nothing else is pathetic.

Or so you thought.

And that's what would have happened if The 7PM Project made fun of the Jakarta bombings. Tasteless and pathetic. Hence, they shouldn't make fun of every story.

Perhaps the people on the 7PM Project would not be intelligent enough, but you can make fun of those bombings without being offensive. Hint: never make fun of the victims who were hurt or the families who were affected, everything else, if done by a skilled comedian, can be funny without being tasteless or pathetic.

That sentence makes no sense whatsoever.

Explanation above.

The first night rated pretty much identical to Masterchef's first night ratings (1.3 million).

The over-reaction towards the Chaser's Make-a-Wish sketch is due to three reasons:

-- the over-saturation of the media leading to issues formerly on the periphery being given more coverage than deserved.

-- Commercialism and the need to sell newspapers and get TV ratings leads news outlets to give attention to popular, mainstream topics.

People will complain about anything. See people complaining about a Chaser stunt about Uluru being filmed on the day an Australian soldier died (fail to see the connection).

The 7-PM project was pretty lame, but it has some promising signs. I agree with the sentiment of making it all satire and no seriousness. They won't survive trying to please both the serious and satire camps.

I thought the other things in that chaser episode were far worse (and funnier) than the make a realistic wish foundation, like the fritzl thing and the gay, jew, muscular dystrophy thing.

I've watched both eps so far and I'm not that impressed, there were some funny moments and its so weird seeing Carrie at the newsdesk without a punch line. She's still one hot MILF 8). Its just dull, the hosts are too serious, they need to relax. Although the banter last night between Matho and Julie (dishboy!) was funny.

They need someone like Shaun Micallef in there to head the show. But I'd rather him stay with TAYG.

I think Channel 10 just realised how great Micallef is, they're wheeling him out for everything, he's going to be on the new season of that stupid 5th Grader show, but he's on it, so it should be good!

I think it's just the way Ch10 contracts work, there is probably a clause that says by request they are required to be on any other show as cross promotion.

Last night's episode was horrible.

Carrie: [introduces serious news topic]
Dave: Wow, yeah, that's not funny at all. Let's not joke about that
Audience: Awkward silence.

That happened twice last night. Why fucking talk about it, if you arent going to joke about it?

I watched it again this week to see if it had improved. It's not as bad as before, but still pretty lame.

One thing that bugged me was how they masturbated all over CostCo like it was SO REVOLUTIONARY and SO BIG and you have to GET A MEMBERSHIP and the products are in SUCH MASSIVE QUANTITIES! Oh yeah, like there isn't anything else in the whole of Australia that does the same thing. Idiots.

My dad has been making some awesome burns on Ruby Rose when watching the show, like mentioning an awesome description of her is 'celebridyke' and everytime she appears on screen saying in a really fake voice "I'm, like, totally a lesbian and I like girls" and doing the stupid girl laugh.
