Is it worth getting an iPhone or should I keep my phone and get an iPod Touch instead?
Are the iPhone plans reasonable, or out-of-the-world expensive?

The plan I got with Optus about 6 months ago was for the 1st Gen. iPhone for $49/month ($0 upfront, $6/month to pay the phone off, and an optional $6/month insurance w/ theft & damage replacement), and includes $300 of talk, text and data usage.
tl;dr - For 6 months I've used the iPhone freely without ever going over my monthly charge
Not sure what their current plans are like, with the iPhone S.
I'd recommend getting it if your contract is coming up. With the new 3.0 OS, it's on par with any other mobile phone and has better audio options (apart from the fact you need to install iTunes, haha).

lol
$6/month insurance$14 come August 27.
They sent me a notice during the week. On that date my insurance with them will shift to their new smartphone insurance, unless you specify for them not to do it.
Of course the smartphone insurance is the only insurance you can get through optus.
So essentially its $14 or no cover.
Optus also charge $10 just for the privilege of tethering (ie, using your phone with its 3G connection as a remote modem), this is before data allowance.
I wish I went the $19 cap and not the $49. I've hardly used 50MB let alone 250MB.
Most of the time I just piggyback off a WiFi connection.
If I'm at home I do, too, but the reason Jackie and I both got this deal is because we don't have a home phone. With the $300 of included calls we can call whoever we want for however long we want (Jackie calls home quite a bit) and hardly dent it.
Yeah I'm not a big phone user. I needed a new phone (old Motorola prepaid was stuffing up) but I wanted to get an iPod as well. Seemed like the ideal stone for these two birds.
Absolutely. My 1st gen. 512Mb Shuffle needed to be upgraded :D

Any reason, adam_91vn?
Also to those of you advocating the iPhone ... is it better to buy one cheaply on eBay and then get a contract to go with it, or get the phone with the contract?
I am leaning towards the iPhone at this stage.
I definitely want to get one ... because I need a new mp3 player (mainly to listen to Chinese language stuff) and because it's about the same $$$ to buy an iPhone/Touch and download a Chinese dictionary app as it is to buy a separate electronic translator that has the same functionality.
I don't really want to carry around both a phone and a Touch at the same time ... so as long as the prices aren't astronomical I figure I might as well just get an iPhone.
Get the iPhone. Otherwise you have twice as much stuff in your pocket.
I'm on a cap plan with vodafone and apart from the woeful reception it's pretty good.

Yeah but you live in Hobart.
What is the price like vs. a non iPhone?
I'd recommend a contract, Readman, unless you've found an awesome BYO phone plan that you really want?...

If you're going to go on a contract then just get a phone through a carrier, depending on how much your contract is you either get the phone for free or really cheap.

I just think the plans and contracts etc are way to much to pay.
I am on prepaid though and have been for a long time.
I use my Ipod touch to watch shows and use the net on it at work, so I guess I don't always have my phone and ipod on me at the same time.

I got an iPhone last week through optus. A $79 plan which gets me $600 worth of calls, an additional $640 of calls optus to optus if I go over the initial $600, unlimited free sms/mms, 1gb of downloads and the phone for free. I also get $10 off the monthly bill, bringing it to $69.
I pay $14 a month insurance on it, and enabled internet tethering (I can't get cable or broadband at my house) with an extra 2gb of data. So I get 3gb all up, and can use the internet on my PC again.
All up it's about $107 a month I think. I'm cancelling the home phone soon so it will be really worth it. $100 for phone AND internet? Awesome.

tpg isn't 3g though?
I'll repeat myself: so how is their coverage?
like i said in the other thread, they run on the optus/soul network. reception is a non-issue for metro users.
