Well I just downloaded a remix album of Donkey Kong Country tunes (Kong In Concert), so I'm giving that a good listen. >_>
Good thing about this remix albums is they usually avoid that generic 'original game theme with a doof every ten seconds' crap that quite a few video game theme remixes pull, this is no exception, the whole thing's pretty cool to listen to.

My mind is currently snaking it's way around the epic clusterfuck of brilliance known as 'Skeletal Lamping' by of Montreal. If there ever was an album cover that represented the music that it contained, this is it.

I've been doing the same, looking at some of the music I have on my computer and thinking 'Why the fuck did I like this at one time?'
I mean, I once listened to Staind. STAIND! THEY'RE FUCKING SHIT!
I don't have much music on the computer, but I do have old CDs. I'm pretty impressed with most of the stuff I used to listen to, although I can see how I've changed in my musical taste.

Suggestions for Metallica albums you mean? If so 'Ride The Lightning' is easily their best. Followed by 'Master Of Puppets.'

I'm currently listening to IWRESTLEDABEARONCE. I was honestly expecting them to be just some lame gimmicky band and was gonna pass on it all together. Glad I didn't though as there's some pretty good stuff. Although, there is still quite a bit of lame gimmicky stuff, such as their lyrics and shitty samples (including the 8 bit mario theme).

Kinda stopped listening to these guys when I left Uni in '06, but this week Triple J have had their new album "Old Crows, Young Cardinals" as their feature album. Talk about a contrast in sound, they've done away with the screamo and become some sort of punk/hard rock band.

Also, as for your suggestion TAT:
Everytime I listen to Hate Crew Deathroll by Children Of Bodom I'm immediately reminded of Black, on Xbox, simply because it was one of the few games that let you play music off your hard drive in the actual game, and capping peeps to Needled 24/7 is just plain fucking awesome fun! Plus since the game is about explosions and shit the fast paced music all just psyched me up generally.

Yeah, I saw that shit. "ohhhhh man Grizzly Bear is amazing" - you have to admit Jay-Z is a pretty smart business man, he knows Pitchfork loves his stuff and subsequently the Pitchfork devotees will love his shit too. This Grizzly Bear fiasco just makes the Pitchforkians wetter than ever.

Look, I may as well admit now that I think Anneke is the best god damn female singer on the planet, and this song is pretty much a perfect example of that.

Oh yeah WHATEVER MUSIC YOU LIKE IS TERRIBLE snap
okay
octavarium is terrible because much like every dream theater release, there's very little in the way of growth and maturation and songcraft takes a backseat to displays of instrumental prowess. moreover, the lyrics are as always cringeworthy.
frances the mute is a regression from de-loused on the comatorium as de-loused's highlights were songs like intertiac esp that utilised strong songwriting. frances pushes the band more towards their experimental tendencies and as a result the album falls flat underneath its own conceptual weight as the music tries too hard to be interesting and forgets that it actually has to be palatable. good, even.

octavarium is terrible because much like every dream theater release, there's very little in the way of growth and maturation and songcraft takes a backseat to displays of instrumental prowess. moreover, the lyrics are as always cringeworthy.
If Dream Theater actually seriously wrote their lyrics in such a cringeworthy way you might actually have a point. As it stands they enjoy wallowing in their own crapulence, and I enjoy going along for the ride.
Going back to your first point: see above. And actually, I've found in their last few releases they have gone someway to showing some "growth" and "maturity"...and have been worse off for it (I just finished listening to Octavarium and it's nowhere near their best, probably will only listen to Panic Attack regularly again).
On a side note, I think that's a bullshit argument for considering the quality of a band, if a band already has well and truly established where they want to be and the reason for why the audience that listens to them likes them. To want to attempt to "grow" and "mature" *for no reason other than WELL THAT'S WHAT WE DO NOWADAYS BOYS, well, time for a things were better back in the day when people didn't care and just listened because it sounded pretty good post.
Also I know you haven't actually listened to Octavarium and are just going by what you think Dream Theater generally are, so that's what you got back in return, plus a little side rant.
*(and I'm putting those words in quotes because they are weak words that people who look at and criticise/review music seem to use when they don't actually know what they're trying to say, or can't specify the point they want to make but "growth and maturity seem pretty close to it right?!")
frances the mute is a regression from de-loused on the comatorium as de-loused's highlights were songs like intertiac esp that utilised strong songwriting. frances pushes the band more towards their experimental tendencies and as a result the album falls flat underneath its own conceptual weight as the music tries too hard to be interesting and forgets that it actually has to be palatable. good, even.
I'm going to ignore all your points and just say for the brief period I've listened to it, it's already hooked me. And again, I like it not because of any intentionally experimental leanings of the band towards the album or whatever, but simply because it sounds good to me.
now aran, why is the album i selected 'terrible'?
Because you like it faggot.
(I don't know, I haven't heard it, but given it's genre, it sounds like the type of music I wouldn't like, thus why it's terrible.)

And they play totally different music too!
Guitar World magazine interviewed MASTODON's Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher for its November 2006 issue. An excerpt from the chat follows:
Guitar World: Let me posit something: You guys definitely have prog elements to your sound, and yet you're exciting and valid — you're cool. Why do you think you're cooler than a band like, say, DREAM THEATER?
Hinds: "Because we don't have a little Chinese girl playing bass! [laughs]"
Guitar World: Yikes!
Hinds: "And they dress all gay, too. I mean, look at them: they wear those cheesy leather pants. The lead singer especially: he's got that really gay thing going on with his hair. Plus, he sings like a fucking opera singer and shit. Their hair, their clothes, their music...They're gay."
Guitar World: Now, wait a second. Are you calling DREAM THEATER a "Brokeback" band? Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Hinds: "No, I don't mean 'gay' like that. I just mean...gay. [laughs]"
Kelliher: "I think what might make us 'cool' and them 'uncool' is the lack of egos in our band. We don't try to show off our amazing versatility every second."
